These large shields, often referred to as pavises, were positioned in front of archer and crossbow units to afford them protection against incoming missile fire. Once the enemy's melee troops became a threat shield bearers would move forward to retrieve the shields and the missile troops would retire to the rear. The set comes with 10 large shields and 10 supports so they may freely stand. They may also be added to attacking spearmen or infantry equipped with dagger-axes to create a truly well protected fighting unit.
